Why the Northwest Territories?

Located above the 60th parallel, the Northwest Territories awaits with seemingly endless lakes and unmatched vistas. The opportunities available in our communities are perfect for the outdoors enthusiast looking for adventure, a healthy work/life balance, and an escape from the hustle of the big city.

Behchokǫ rests upon the North Arm of Great Slave Lake, and is known for its rich history, beautiful rugged landscape and roaming wildlife.  This community is a short drive from the Capital of Yellowknife.

The Beaufort-Delta Region is home to the northern-most communities in the Northwest Territories. Famous for wildlife sightings like polar bears, reindeer, muskoxen and caribou, this unique region above the tree line is simply breathtaking. Popular activities include taking a dip in the Arctic Ocean and exploring the unique landscape of the pingos. With most communities in this region accessible by road, there is a full range of essential services.

The Sahtu Region is an explorer’s dream, as it is home to beautiful mountain landscapes, the famous Canol Heritage Trail and Great Bear Lake, whose deep waters make for excellent fishing.

About the Work

Located within the Community Health Centre and reporting directly to the Nurse in Charge (NIC), the Community Health Nurse helps to deliver community health services to the client population.  The Health Centre is the sole medical facility in the community.

Community Health Services include providing non-emergency medical care; responding to medical emergencies that require decision making outside of the usual policies, procedures and standards of nursing care; and delivering nursing programs designed to promote community health and wellness.  Services may be provided within the Health Centre, community halls, schools and in a patient's home (i.e. elderly population) and are intended to promote a healthy way of life, and decrease the incidence of death and disease.  Services may be provided on an individual basis or as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Positions are currently available in Aklavik, Behchokǫ, Deline, Fort Good Hope Fort Providence, Fort Resolution, Norman Wells, Ulukhaktok, and Yellowknife.

Typically these positions require a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, plus two (2) years of recent nursing experience in an acute care setting or within a northern health centre.
